North Dakota gross returns from HRS wheat, durum wheat, and barley declined in 1999, relative to the expected gross returns, due to adverse weather conditions and low prices. The total gross return reductions in 1999 was estimated to be $361 million, which was divided into $51 million from weather and disease and $329 million from lower-than-average prices. Gross return reductions were largest in Region 1 (Northwest), followed by Regions 3 (Northeast) and 6 (East Central). HRS wheat accounted for the largest income loss, followed by durum and barley. However, total net farm income increased in 1999 relative to 1998, because of government payments and crop insurance. |

Fusarium Head Blight (FHB), commonly known as scab, has been a severe problem for wheat and barley producers since 1993. This study provides an update of economic losses suffered by wheat and barley producers in scab-affected regions in the United States. Emphasis is placed on estimating direct and secondary economic impacts of yield and price losses suffered by wheat and barley producers from 1993 to 2001. Nine states are included in the analysis for three wheat classes. Three of the nine states were also used for the analysis of malting and feed barley. Monitoramento de perdas na colheita para evitar desperdício de soja é o tema do programa desta semana no Prosa Rural. A Embrapa estima que os sojicultores perdem aproximadamente duas sacas por hectare, durante o processo de colheita. Sendo que o índice considerado tolerável é de até uma saca, cerca de 60 quilos, por hectare. No programa desta semana, os pesquisadores da Embrapa Soja, José Miguel Silveira e Osmar Conte , falam sobre medidas corretivas que podem reverter esse quadro de perdas na colheita. The largest losses in mechanical harvesting of peanuts occur during the stage of digging, and its assessment is still incipient in Brazil. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the quantitative losses and the performance of the tractor-digger-inverter, according to soil water content and plant populations. The experiment was conducted in a completely randomized block design with a factorial scheme 2 x 3, in which the treatments consisted of two soil, water content (19.3 and 24.8%) and three populations of plants (86,111, 127,603 and 141,144 plants ha-1), with four replications.
